The second episode of HBO's video game adaptation "The Last of Us" Season 2 has sparked intense discussion among fans, as the shocking death of lead character Joel faithfully adapts a pivotal moment from the original game, "The Last of Us Part II".

Pedro Pascal, who portrays Joel, recently spoke for the first time about his character's exit, admitting he is "actively denying reality" and calling it a performance experience he found difficult to let go of.

In the latest episode, Joel is brutally murdered by Abby, portrayed by Kaitlyn Dever. Abby is revealed to be the daughter of the doctor Joel killed at the end of Season 1. Seeking revenge for her father, she first shoots Joel, then beats him to death with a golf club and a spiked weapon. This scene left many viewers emotionally devastated, and Pascal openly described it as a "heartbreaking" performance.

Pascal told Entertainment Weekly that the creators didn't initially tell him he would die at the beginning of Season 2, but there was a mutual understanding that the adaptation would remain faithful to the source material, and his commitment to the first season felt like a phased promise. He added that he deeply respected the emotional investment audiences had in the show, stating that the ability to cause heartbreak meant the story truly resonated with people, which he considered a great achievement in storytelling.

Recalling his blood-soaked appearance on set, Pascal said the atmosphere was unforgettable, noting that people weren't disgusted but genuinely heartbroken. Regarding Joel's departure, he admitted that he found himself more prone to denial as he got older. He acknowledged that this experience would forever connect with many, but the realization that he and Ellie would not meet again in their roles saddened him.

Bella Ramsey, who plays Ellie, confessed that she knew the plot development beforehand but still couldn't stop crying when she actually read the script. She stated that as she read, she was dreading when that particular scene would appear, and ultimately, she cried profusely, marking the first time she had ever wept so much from reading a script.

Series co-creator Craig Mazin explained that the decision to have Joel exit early in Season 2 was to avoid the prolonged agony of "torturing the audience." He emphasized that they wanted it to happen organically within the narrative, rather than deliberately delaying it for shock value.
