Larian Studios Explains Why "Baldur's Gate 3" Won't Get DLC: "It's Too Boring"

After its launch last year, "Baldur's Gate 3" quickly became a globally acclaimed RPG masterpiece, garnering both critical praise and impressive sales. However, developer Larian Studios made the surprising decision not to release any DLC or sequels for the title. The studio even officially bid farewell to the game in April after rolling out its final major update.

Recently, Larian founder Swen Vincke once again addressed this decision, admitting that developing DLC was simply "too boring" for them.

Speaking with "GameSpot," Vincke stated, "We did discuss DLC, but we just couldn't get ourselves to do it. The market and business logic pointed to doing it, but our hearts weren't in it. We tried to do DLC, but it failed every time; it's just not what we're good at." He emphasized that the development team's passion and creative drive are crucial for maintaining game quality and player experience, adding that "happy developers make happy players."

Vincke noted that while there's a common expectation for popular games to "naturally" release various expansion content, he said that "when we really sat down and thought about it, we realized we didn't actually want to do it. We just said 'screw it' and moved in a completely new direction."

Regarding Larian's future, Vincke only revealed that the team is currently fully committed to its "extremely ambitious" next major title, and has already begun preliminary work on a second project. While both projects remain under wraps, he admitted that the games the development team creates are inherently complex and full of variables, making their development highly challenging.

Although the story of "Baldur's Gate 3" concludes here, Larian's passion and ambition for game creation are clearly just beginning a new chapter.
