Disney's 1991 adventure film "The Rocketeer" has long been rumored for a sequel. Four years ago, British actor David Oyelowo (pictured left below) was confirmed to take on the sequel project, developing "The Return of the Rocketeer." However, four years have passed, and the Rocketeer has yet to return. Recently, in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Oyelowo finally explained the reasons for the film's delay.

In the interview, Oyelowo revealed that the development of several projects at Yoruba Saxon, the production company he co-founded with his wife Jessica Oyelowo (pictured right above), has been hindered by shifting public perception of DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) policies. These projects, including the fantasy novel adaptation "Onyeka and the Academy of the Sun" and "The Return of the Rocketeer," feature protagonists of color.
Oyelowo stated that "Onyeka" gained traction after the murder of George Floyd, which was a period of cultural reckoning when people seemed eager for change. He noted that the current era sees many engaging in performative actions rather than genuine, deep-seated reform, making it suddenly difficult to advance projects like "Onyeka" and "The Return of the Rocketeer," which is in development at Disney.

Despite the challenges, Oyelowo vowed that they would continue to push these projects forward, undeterred by the current social climate. He emphasized that they had begun developing these initiatives long before DEI policies came under scrutiny, and they remain committed to their implementation.
While Oyelowo is currently only confirmed as a producer for "The Return of the Rocketeer," previous reports suggested he might also star in the film. Four years ago, Edward Ricourt, known for writing "Now You See Me," was attached to pen the script, though it's unclear if there have been any subsequent changes. The project is reportedly a soft reboot sequel, centering on a retired Tuskegee Airman who takes on the mantle of the new Rocketeer. Furthermore, this sequel is planned as a direct-to-streaming release exclusively for Disney+.
