Lionsgate officially announced at this year's CinemaCon last month that the "John Wick" franchise is moving forward with a second spinoff film: a standalone story centered on Caine, the blind assassin played by Donnie Yen in "John Wick: Chapter 4." Today, Variety magazine further revealed that Rina Sawayama, who portrayed Akira in "John Wick: Chapter 4," is also confirmed to return for the project.

The final post-credits scene of "John Wick: Chapter 4" already hinted at Akira seeking revenge on Caine for killing her father, making her return in "Caine" an entirely expected development if the film is to continue that plot thread.
"Caine" will be directed by and star Donnie Yen, who will also co-produce alongside Chad Stahelski, the director of the main four "John Wick" films. Mattson Tomlin, showrunner of the Netflix animated series "Terminator Zero," is set to pen the script. The film is expected to heavily incorporate Hong Kong martial arts action styles, showcasing Yen's signature skills. Lionsgate will be selling distribution rights for the film at this year's Cannes Film Festival, with production slated to begin in the second half of this year.
