According to the latest rumors, Rockstar Games is developing a port of "Grand Theft Auto IV" for modern console platforms, with a potential release as early as this year. This information comes from well-known Rockstar insider Tez2, who has a history of accurately leaking details related to the "Grand Theft Auto" series.
Tez2 noted on the GTA Forums that an internal Rockstar source hinted at the "Grand Theft Auto IV" port being in development over a year ago.
Even more notably, this port project is reportedly one of the reasons Rockstar halted the fan-made "Liberty City Preservation Project" earlier this year. That project aimed to bring "Grand Theft Auto IV"'s Liberty City map into "Grand Theft Auto V" for players, but it now appears Rockstar intends to release its own official version.
If these rumors prove true, it would mark Rockstar's second remaster of an older title for new-generation consoles, following "Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition".
Tez2 also mentioned that, based on Rockstar's internal schedule since the pandemic, a port of "Max Payne 3" is slated to follow "Grand Theft Auto IV". There's even a possibility that remasters of "Max Payne" and "Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne" could be released in the future, potentially as a collection or a "Definitive Edition".
It's worth noting that "Grand Theft Auto IV" is set in Liberty City, the same city from which "Grand Theft Auto VI" protagonist Lucia originates. This connection has led many fans to speculate that a "Grand Theft Auto IV" remaster might not just be a nostalgic revisit, but could also serve as a narrative precursor to the world of "Grand Theft Auto VI". 
"Grand Theft Auto VI" is currently scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S platforms. With the highly anticipated new mainline entry still some time away, a "Grand Theft Auto IV" remaster could undoubtedly build excitement and reignite "Grand Theft Auto" fever among players.
