Casting announcements have been arriving in quick succession for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, the franchise’s second prequel film. The latest addition is Maya Hawke (Maya Hawke), who has drawn widespread attention for her role in Stranger Things. She will play Wiress, the eccentric victor of the 49th Hunger Games. An older version of the character was portrayed by Amanda Plummer (Amanda Plummer, pictured below) in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
Meanwhile, prominent entertainment journalist Jeff Sneider (Jeff Sneider) reported on his blog, The InSneider, that Golden Globe winner Glenn Close (Glenn Close) was also in talks to join the cast. However, he did not disclose which role she was being considered for.
In addition to Hawke, Lionsgate announced that Lili Taylor (Lili Taylor) had joined the film as Mags Flanagan, the victor of the 11th Hunger Games. An older Mags was played by Lynn Cohen (Lynn Cohen, pictured below) in Catching Fire.
Previously announced cast members for Sunrise on the Reaping include newcomer Joseph Zada (Joseph Zada, pictured below) as the teenage Haymitch; Gossip Girl star Whitney Peak (Whitney Peak) as Haymitch’s girlfriend, Lenore Dove Baird; and Ghostbusters franchise actress Mckenna Grace (Mckenna Grace) as Maysilee Donner, one of District 12’s tributes in the 50th Hunger Games.

Jesse Plemons (Jesse Plemons) had also been confirmed to play a younger Plutarch Heavensbee, the future Gamemaker portrayed by Philip Seymour Hoffman (Philip Seymour Hoffman) in Catching Fire. Kelvin Harrison Jr. (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) will play Beetee Latier, the victor of the 34th Hunger Games. An older version of Beetee was portrayed by Jeffrey Wright (Jeffrey Wright) in Catching Fire.

Sunrise on the Reaping will be directed by Francis Lawrence (Francis Lawrence), who helmed the final three installments of the original saga and its first prequel, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. Billy Ray (Billy Ray), who co-wrote the first Hunger Games film, returns to pen the screenplay.
The film is based on the novel of the same name published by Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins (Suzanne Collins) in March 2025. Set 24 years before the first installment, the story follows 16-year-old Haymitch as he competes in and ultimately wins the 50th Hunger Games. The film is scheduled to open in North American theaters on November 20, 2026, with production expected to begin in Germany in July 2025.
