"Mario Kart World" Was Originally Planned for the First Switch? Performance Bottlenecks Stymied Development for Years, Until...

Nintendo Switch 2 is almost here, and while everyone's buzzing about its next-gen power, the real showstopper might just be its launch title: "Mario Kart World." But here's a wild twist – this brand-new Mario Kart actually started development five years ago, initially targeting the *original* Nintendo Switch.

In a recent "Ask the Developer" interview, Nintendo revealed that "Mario Kart World" was originally envisioned as an open-world experience supporting up to 24 online players. The plan was to launch it on the OG Nintendo Switch, but those ambitions quickly slammed into the console's hardware limitations.

"We talked about lowering the resolution, simplifying visuals, even dropping some scene framerates to 30fps," said Program Director Kenta Sato. "But those compromises felt incredibly painful."

Producer Kosuke Yabuki chimed in, adding that while the team tried to push through the technical hurdles, they knew it was a losing battle. "We kept delaying and compromising," he explained. "The whole development process felt like we were just kicking a can down the road."

Then, around 2020, a glimmer of hope appeared. Nintendo started getting a clearer picture of the Nintendo Switch 2's projected specs. Even without dev kits in hand, the team began considering a platform shift to the next-gen console. Yabuki described the decision as "a ray of light," not only easing immense development pressure but also unlocking a whole new world of technical possibilities.

Sato recalled, "When we realized the new platform would let us achieve our original vision, and even deliver richer details, the joy was indescribable."

To buy themselves more time and breathing room, Nintendo simultaneously launched the "Booster Course Pass" for "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe." This strategic move allowed "Mario Kart World"'s development to be smoothly extended, giving the team crucial time to refine its core systems and visual presentation.
