Hideo Kojima Confirms "Death Stranding" Animated Series in Production, Running Alongside Live-Action Film as IP Enters "Phase Two"

Get ready, Porters! The world of "Death Stranding" is officially expanding into animation. Legendary game creator Hideo Kojima recently confirmed in an interview with "Vogue Japan" that an animated adaptation of "Death Stranding" is now in production. This new project will run as a standalone endeavor, developed concurrently with the previously announced live-action film.

In the interview, Kojima delved into his long-term vision for the "Death Stranding" franchise, expressing his belief that "the boundaries between games and films will gradually disappear," leading to an increasing fusion of expressive forms across media. He emphasized that he isn't interested in merely "copy-pasting" game content into film or animation. Instead, he aims to create a "Death Stranding" experience that can "only be realized in a movie or anime."

"Currently, I'm collaborating with A24 to produce a live-action film version of 'Death Stranding'," Kojima continued. "I want to create a work that can enter international film festivals like Cannes and Venice, not just cater to fans, but truly leverage the expressive power of cinema. At the same time, we're also producing an animated version, presenting a new challenge across a different medium."

This marks the first explicit public confirmation from Kojima that a "Death Stranding" animated project is officially underway. In fact, as early as September 2024, he hinted at this expansion during an interview with ">Variety, stating that "Death Stranding"'s "Phase Two" development wouldn't be limited to games but would extend to various media like films, animation, and TV series.

"We're working on a sequel, which is the game part," he stated back then. "And next, it's the expansion into different forms like film, animation, and TV dramas – that's our next step."

The live-action "Death Stranding" film is currently being produced by A24, with Michael Sarnoski, director of "A Quiet Place: Day One," attached as writer and director. Kojima's choice to partner with A24 reportedly stems from his high standards for cinematic quality.

Specific details about the animated series remain under wraps, so it's unclear whether it will feature an original storyline or adapt the game's main plot. However, based on Kojima's statements, this animated venture will similarly aim to explore "Death Stranding's" core themes of connection and solitude through its unique style.
