"Death Stranding 2" ESRB Rating Confirms Playable "Battle Guitar" as Melee Weapon, Igniting Fan Buzz

Get ready, Porters! As the highly anticipated "Death Stranding 2: On the Beach" gears up for release, the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) has dropped a bombshell in its rating summary: players will be able to wield a "battle guitar" as a melee weapon! This electrifying revelation has sent fans into a frenzy.

Hold up, though – this isn't the guitar's first rodeo. The instrument actually made a flashy cameo in a promo trailer a year ago, with antagonist Higgs Monaghan shredding on it and seemingly using it in combat. Back then, it was all speculation; many assumed it was just a cinematic flourish. Now, the ESRB has officially confirmed it's a fully playable melee weapon, adding a whole new dimension to Sam's arsenal.

According to the ESRB's rating description, players will guide protagonist Sam through a post-apocalyptic world, delivering cargo and battling hostile soldiers, robots, and spectral entities. While familiar firearms like machine guns and sniper rifles are on the menu, players can also take down foes with melee weapons, including the now-legendary "battle guitar."

The ESRB also spilled the beans on the game's intense violence and gore, mentioning scenes where characters are dismembered by robot samurai, sliced in half by massive machinery, or even fantastically set ablaze. All this confirms the game's M-rating (for ages 17 and up).

Beyond the game itself, Hideo Kojima is keeping busy! He's currently collaborating with A24 on a live-action film adaptation of "Death Stranding," with an animated version also in the works. And if that wasn't enough, Kojima is also developing "Physint," a PlayStation-exclusive action-espionage title, alongside a brand-new project, "OD," in partnership with Xbox.

"Death Stranding 2: On the Beach" is slated to launch on PlayStation 5 on June 26, 2025.
