David Harbour and Scarlett Johansson, who played the spy father-daughter duo in "Black Widow," are close friends in real life. The two recently interviewed each other for Interview magazine, discussing their professional experiences, including the fatigue that can arise from long-term involvement in major franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Harbour, who gained widespread recognition for his role in "Stranger Things," admitted that he felt this sentiment more deeply from that series. He recalled a fellow actor, a long-time lead in a TV show, telling him that actors often start to feel like moving on by the third or fourth season. However, Harbour, full of enthusiasm when he first joined "Stranger Things," never imagined he'd feel that way.
Yet, after a certain point, Harbour confessed he indeed began to wonder, "How many more stories are there to tell?" He expressed a strong desire to explore other roles audiences hadn't seen him play.

Johansson then shared her own similar experiences from her long tenure in the MCU. She explained that some Marvel films allowed for deeper character development than others. For instance, she felt she had significant material to work with alongside Chris Evans in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier." However, in other Marvel movies, with their massive ensembles and numerous storylines, she would start to feel like "just a plot device." She elaborated that if you spend "five and a half months" in that state, you begin to think, "Okay, I can't paint my nails, I can't cut my hair." While these might sound like trivial concerns, she noted that her identity was constrained by the role for a long time, and if, as an actor, you don't get to delve deeply into the performance, "sometimes you feel a bit inhibited."

During their conversation, the duo also discussed Harbour's upcoming return in "Thunderbolts*." Given that nearly half of the film's main cast originated from "Black Widow," Marvel Studios had initially listed Johansson, who also served as a producer on "Black Widow," as a producer for "Thunderbolts*." However, Johansson, who was not involved in the production of "Thunderbolts*," did not want to receive an unearned credit and proactively requested Marvel to remove her name. Upon learning this, Harbour couldn't resist quipping, "Do you hate the movie that much?" playfully suggesting Johansson wanted to distance herself from "Thunderbolts*."
