"Magic: The Gathering" Beta Set Valued at Nearly 40 Million Yen on Japanese Appraisal Show!

Ever tuned into "Kaiun! Nandemo Kanteidan" (Treasure! Anything Appraisers)? This long-running Japanese variety show, now over 30 years old, regularly features fascinating individuals bringing in their cherished collectibles and antiques for appraisal. Sometimes it's junk, other times it's a hidden gem – and the format has inspired similar shows in other regions.

In the latest episode, which aired yesterday (June 10), Mr. Fujiwara from Osaka brought in a truly mind-blowing treasure: a complete 302-card "Magic: The Gathering" Beta Edition set! This incredible collection instantly sparked buzz, leaving everyone wondering just how much it could be worth.

For those unfamiliar, "Magic: The Gathering" (MTG) launched in 1993 as the world's first collectible card game (TCG), boasting a massive global fanbase. Mr. Fujiwara's collection is the highly sought-after Beta edition, released in October 1993 as a revised version of the Alpha set (adding seven new cards).

Among the cards is the legendary "Black Lotus," a dream item for many players. He originally acquired it for 100,000 yen. Last May, a perfectly graded "Black Lotus" fetched a staggering 3 million USD at auction.

Mr. Fujiwara began collecting in 1997, spending several years and approximately 1 million yen to complete the full set.

With the recent surge in vintage card prices, Mr. Fujiwara was naturally curious about its current value. He personally estimated it at 20 million yen. This left many studio guests stunned, exclaiming, "It's just paper cards!" (A perfectly normal reaction for those outside the hobby, of course).

However, the actual appraised value blew everyone away: a jaw-dropping 38 million yen! Hiuma Ishiwatari, store manager of MINT GAMES MTG and the appraiser, declared, "A complete 302-card set like this appearing in Japan is likely unprecedented. It's a miracle!"

Based on the set's condition, Ishiwatari noted that the "Black Lotus" alone is worth 8 million yen, while the legendary "Power Nine" cards are valued at 20.1 million yen.

Upon hearing the appraisal, Mr. Fujiwara stated, "If there's someone who wants to collect it, I'm willing to part with it, as long as they will cherish it."

Many netizens were amazed that a complete Beta set existed in Japan, calling it a dream achievement for MTG players. They speculated that if the preservation was even better, the value could be even more insane.

Of course, for most people, this value is truly baffling, as many don't understand the market for "Magic: The Gathering" cards. Some online comments even read, "Isn't this just the card game I played with friends as a kid? How is it worth this much now...?"

It's safe to say this complete "Magic: The Gathering" Beta Edition set is an incredibly rare find, and it was quite the surprise to see it featured on "Kaiun! Nandemo Kanteidan." With this news out, we wouldn't be surprised if Mr. Fujiwara gets a flood of offers from eager collectors! XD
