“Famicom Controllers on Switch 2?!” Nintendo’s Official Post Sparks Viral Debate

Many gamers will undoubtedly remember Nintendo’s iconic “Famicom” console, affectionately known as the “Red and White Machine.” Even today, retro Famicom consoles are still released, packed with classic games that were a core part of many gamers’ childhoods, bringing back a flood of memories.

Yesterday (July 15), Nintendo’s official X account (@nintendo_cs) dropped a bombshell post: “Famicom controllers can be used on Nintendo Switch 2.” The image, featuring the latest Switch 2 alongside a nostalgic 1980s Famicom controller, created such a surreal juxtaposition that it instantly ignited a heated discussion among netizens.

In reality, the official post aimed to clarify compatibility information between the Switch 2 and Famicom controllers. The post also reminded users that while Famicom controllers can indeed be used with the Switch 2, they still require either the Switch console itself or a Joy-Con 2-way charging grip for power, which must be acquired separately.

To illustrate this point, Nintendo shared an image showing the Famicom controller attached to a Joy-Con charging grip. This cross-generational gaming setup struck many as both oddly incongruous and utterly amusing.

In fact, if you visit Nintendo’s Support website, you’ll find that the Switch 2 is compatible with almost all controllers from previous consoles, even supporting Sega’s MegaDrive. This post served as a fun reminder of that little-known fact for players.

Upon seeing the image, netizens flooded the comments with remarks like, “This looks so bizarre,” “I thought it was a meme, but it’s official,” and “This sight is so unscientific yet so funny lol.” The overall mood was one of pure delight.

Coincidentally, July 15th marks the original release date of the Famicom, also known as “Famicom Day” (ファミコンの日). Since its launch on July 15, 1983, the console has now celebrated its 42nd anniversary. This amusing share was a fitting way to celebrate the Famicom’s birthday.
