Nintendo Issues Warning: Japan-Exclusive Switch 2 Models Not Covered by Overseas Warranty

The highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 officially launched in early June, sparking a global frenzy among gamers. Even before its release, Nintendo's stock had been on a steady climb, reflecting strong market confidence in the company, with even brighter prospects as more games are slated for future release.

Yesterday, Nintendo's official customer service account (@nintendo_cs) posted on X, specifically cautioning players about the upcoming "Nintendo Switch 2 Japan-Exclusive Edition": "Please avoid using it overseas." The company, however, did not provide further details on the reason.

This Japan-exclusive version of the Switch 2 is limited to Nintendo accounts with their region set to Japan, and its system language only supports Japanese, with no option to switch to other languages. Nintendo stated that with many people traveling abroad this summer, if a Switch 2 is taken overseas and malfunctions, the official warranty will not cover repairs.

According to Nintendo's official website, any Nintendo Switch console sold in Japan will not be eligible for warranty or repair services if it malfunctions or encounters issues while being used overseas. This applies to the console itself and any related damages, with no assistance provided. Users are urged to understand these terms. Nintendo also listed several important considerations for overseas use:

1. Adhere to Local Laws and Regulations

Different countries have varying regulations for electronic products. Always comply with local laws to avoid legal issues.

2. AC Adapter Usage Reminder

The AC adapter included with the Japanese Switch (model [HAC-002(JPN)]) supports international voltages from 100V to 240V. However, its plug is Japanese standard (Type A). If you plan to use it overseas, you'll need to provide your own compatible travel adapter. Nintendo has not tested various travel adapters and therefore cannot guarantee safe and stable operation when using one.

3. Game Cartridge Compatibility

While most Switch game cartridges purchased overseas (physical games) can run on a Japanese console, Nintendo does not guarantee that every title will function correctly and offers no warranty or support services for them.

4. Wireless Functionality

Wireless features (such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC) on devices like the console, Joy-Con, and Pro Controllers can only be used in countries or regions where they have obtained legal wireless certification. Using wireless functions in uncertified countries may violate local laws and result in penalties.

Additionally, Nintendo also provided a usage environment page for "multi-language versions." The company stated that if a multi-language console malfunctions or encounters issues while being used overseas, it will not be covered by warranty or repair services.

Essentially, the core message is that if your console, regardless of whether it's the Japan-exclusive or multi-language model purchased in Japan, encounters issues while you're traveling abroad, Nintendo will not provide warranty repair services. So, if you plan to take your Switch 2 overseas, it's best to handle it with extra care!
