DC Studios announced a new animated series, "My Adventures with Green Lantern," in January, featuring Jessica Cruz, the first female member of the Green Lantern Corps, as its protagonist.
Recent casting calls have unveiled the initial plot and character details, indicating that this new generation Green Lantern's origin story will significantly diverge from the comic book version.
Producers are currently seeking a Latina actress, 18 years or older, to voice the 14-15 year old Jessica, with singing ability also a requirement.
According to the casting description, Jessica initially enjoyed a normal, happy childhood, passionate about softball and inseparable from her best friends, Kyle (not necessarily the Green Lantern Kyle Rayner) and Nikki. However, as her peers entered adolescence and their personalities grew harsher, she was betrayed by friends and ostracized from her team, leading her to withdraw and protect herself from further hurt.
The story will begin with Jessica starting her freshman year of high school. An anxious freshman who simply wants to maintain a low profile, she is unexpectedly chosen by a magical ring, becoming a Green Lantern and protector of all life in the universe. As she confronts her fears and self-doubt, she will gradually discover her resilience and courage, ultimately evolving into one of the world's greatest heroes.
This series is set in the same universe as the animated hit "My Adventures with Superman," which features Jack Quaid as the voice of Clark Kent. DC Studios has positioned "My Adventures with Green Lantern" as a "younger-skewing" project, announced for development alongside "DC Super Powers" and "Starfire." Despite targeting a younger demographic, the widespread success of "My Adventures with Superman" demonstrates that this genre can still captivate a broad audience.
Compared to the comics, the series will completely reimagine Jessica's origin. In the New 52 comics, she was chosen by the "Ring of Volthoom" after enduring severe trauma from witnessing her friends brutally murdered during a hunting trip.
The animated version, however, removes this dark background, opting instead to portray adolescent interpersonal conflicts and self-growth, a narrative approach significantly more palatable for younger viewers.
The plot also hints that Jessica's challenges extend beyond the arrival of her ring. Remnants of ancient Green Lantern Corps space wars and alien adversaries will also emerge, forcing her to navigate unprecedented challenges balancing her academics, personal life, and the monumental task of saving the world.
