Capcom has officially shut down speculation: Pragmata is not a stealth Mega Man title, but a completely original new IP. This declaration puts an end to months of fervent fan theories and once again spotlights the ongoing questions about the future of the Mega Man (Rockman) series.
The rumors first ignited with the reveal of Pragmata's character designs. Many players noted the game's mechanical girl companion, Diana, bore a striking resemblance to Mega Man. Add to that the game's setting—a moon base overrun by virus-infected evil machines—and the thematic echoes with classic Mega Man lore were hard to ignore.
However, Pragmata producer Naoto Oyama (大山直人) chuckled as he debunked the theories in an interview with VGC: "Pragmata is not a Mega Man game; it's a brand-new, original Capcom title."
Oyama, who also produced the Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection, added that he understands the fans' passion. "It's actually a good thing for me to see Mega Man fans also excited about Pragmata," he remarked.
In fact, Capcom reiterated its respect for the Mega Man series this past summer, stating it continues to explore possibilities for reviving the iconic franchise.
While several compilation titles have launched in recent years, it's been a long wait for a new mainline entry. The series hasn't seen a new game since 2018's Mega Man 11, which itself followed an eight-year hiatus after Mega Man 10 (2010).
As for Pragmata, it stands as one of Capcom's rare new original IPs. First unveiled in June 2020, the game has faced multiple development delays and is now slated for a 2026 release. For a company renowned for its long-running sagas like Monster Hunter, Resident Evil, and Street Fighter, Capcom's commitment to Pragmata is notably distinctive.
