Hideo Kojima Flat-Out Refuses to Play Konami's "Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater" Remake, Reigniting "Phantom Pain" Unfinished Work Debate

It's been a decade since Hideo Kojima and Konami parted ways, but the "Metal Gear Solid" series still sparks endless conversation.

Recently, the development team behind "Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater" expressed in an interview their hope that Kojima would see the remake they're crafting with "respect." Meanwhile, Kojima himself shared an article on social media, once again fanning the flames of the "unfinished" controversy surrounding "Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain."

In an interview with foreign media outlet Inverse, "Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater" producer Noriaki Okamura emphasized, "We want to deliver this game with the utmost respect for everyone who has worked on it in the past, and we really hope Kojima-san gets to see it."

However, Kojima, who has completely distanced himself from Konami, has a decidedly different take. When asked this summer in an interview if he would play "Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater," he even laughed and replied, "No, I won't." He added that even during his Konami days, he was well aware of "Metal Gear Solid"'s strong commercial value as "my IP," and thus understood the remake's rationale, but he personally has no intention of participating in or supporting it.

Even more notably, in early September 2025, Kojima shared an Inverse article on X (formerly Twitter) with a headline boldly declaring "Phantom Pain" an "unfinished masterpiece" that continues to influence the gaming world. This move was widely seen as his personal acknowledgment that the game was indeed incomplete upon release.

Back then, his relationship with Konami deteriorated during the late stages of development, leading to the forced removal of numerous missions and story elements. Players even discovered concept art and videos of unfinished chapters in the collector's edition, further substantiating that the game was originally intended to have a more complete ending.

While "Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain" was hailed as a major breakthrough for the series in open-world gameplay, offering players immense freedom, its abrupt ending and incomplete narrative have consistently been the most contentious topics within the community. For many fans, it's not just a great work, but a classic forever marked by its missing pieces.

Today, on one side, there's Konami's remake team dedicated to reviving the series' classics. On the other, Hideo Kojima is continuously pushing the boundaries of his personal creative vision with new titles like "Death Stranding 2," "OD," and "Physint." The contrast between the two only solidifies the belief that "Phantom Pain" might truly be the last MGS content personally helmed by Kojima.

A decade on, players' sentiments remain unchanged: Some still revel in "Phantom Pain"'s allure, even with its missing chapters. Others hold onto hope that Kojima might one day return to the iconic series. Regardless of the outcome, the saga and legacy between "Metal Gear Solid" and Hideo Kojima are clearly set to leave an indelible mark on gaming history.
