To mark the 40th anniversary of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) hitting North American shelves, renowned peripheral brand 8BitDo has unveiled its brand-new "NES40 Special Series."
This collection is all about blending nostalgia with cutting-edge tech, featuring redesigned versions of three of their iconic products: the Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller, the Retro 68 Keyboard N40 Edition, and the Retro Cube 2 Wireless Speaker. Each piece sports the classic NES black, grey, and red color scheme, launching as a limited-edition collector's series.
Undoubtedly the star of the show is the Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller N40 Edition. This version rocks a fresh NES-inspired aesthetic and comes bundled with a charging dock and four interchangeable thumbstick caps. The grips are specially embossed with various years, commemorating key product releases from both Nintendo and 8BitDo throughout history.
Functionality-wise, it keeps all the beloved features of the original: TMR sticks, Hall Effect triggers, a customizable RGB LED ring, along with remappable back buttons and shoulder buttons. Plus, it’s ready for Switch, Switch 2, and Windows platforms.
Priced at $79.99, the controller package includes an NES Retro Receiver and a 2.4GHz wireless receiver. Only 1,985 units will be available, with an official release set for November 15, 2025.
While the controller focuses on killer looks, the Retro 68 Keyboard N40 Edition gets some serious hardware muscle. For the first time ever, 8BitDo has crafted the entire casing, keycaps, and switches from aluminum alloy. It also features brand-new Kailh Box Ice Cream Pro Max linear switches, promising an even smoother typing experience.
What's more, the keyboard layout has been streamlined from 87 keys down to a more compact 68. It packs a hefty 6,500mAh battery, delivering an epic 300 hours of battery life. And those awesome "Super Buttons" – the giant programmable keys – have gone wireless. Weighing in at 2.2kg, the N40 keyboard carries a premium price tag of $499.99, with shipments expected in January 2026.
Rounding out the series is the Retro Cube 2 Wireless Speaker N Edition. It maintains that iconic retro vibe but boasts a complete hardware overhaul. The new model features dual-channel stereo speakers, a built-in microphone, and a 2,000mAh battery for up to 30 hours of playback.
It also adds a 2.4GHz wireless connection mode and a USB-C interface, plus support for a wireless charging dock. The speaker will retail for $49.99 and is slated for release on December 8, 2025.
With the NES40 series, 8BitDo isn't just paying homage to the birth of the NES in 1985; they're showcasing how to seamlessly blend nostalgic design with modern technology, ensuring the spirit of the "golden age of gaming" lives on, 40 years later, in a fresh new form.
