Reggie Fils-Aimé, former president of Nintendo of America, recently shared his thoughts on Nintendo's Nintendo Switch 2 launch strategy for this year during an interview with "The Game Business." He admitted to being "a little perplexed" by the console's launch and its first-half game lineup, and expressed surprise that Microsoft hasn't aggressively expanded onto the Switch 2 platform.
Fils-Aimé stated that from a business perspective, while the Switch 2's launch lineup isn't exactly sparse, it "lacks that past sense of impact" in terms of strategy and momentum.

He pointed out that Nintendo's key titles planned for the first six months of the Switch 2 include "Donkey Kong Country Returns HD," "Kirby's Epic Yarn," the new "Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity," and cross-gen titles "Metroid Prime 4: Beyond" and "Pokémon Legends: Z-A."
"When I first saw that list, I was indeed a little perplexed," Fils-Aimé remarked. He believes that compared to the original Switch, which launched with heavy-hitters like "Super Mario Odyssey" and "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" as a dual punch, plus a groundbreaking new IP like "Splatoon," the Switch 2's overall lineup seems a bit conservative.
However, he added that Nintendo's recent enhancements to its Nintendo Switch Online subscription content have indeed provided stable longevity for the platform: "That free content is very appealing, and 'Donkey Kong Country Returns HD' is clearly a key title driving console excitement."

Fils-Aimé also acknowledged the Switch 2's potential as a third-party platform but cautioned that Nintendo must continue to provide more comprehensive development support tools to allow external teams to fully leverage the hardware's performance.
"The Nintendo team was able to cram massive titles like 'Tears of the Kingdom' into tiny cartridges because of their deep understanding of the console's architecture. Now they need to give third parties that same capability," Fils-Aimé stated.
Additionally, he specifically called out Microsoft, expressing surprise that Xbox hasn't further expanded onto the Switch 2: "I expected to see more Xbox titles ported to the Switch 2 before the holiday season, but there's nothing so far, which is quite surprising."
Currently, while Microsoft has brought "Sea of Thieves" and "Hi-Fi Rush" to PlayStation 5, it has yet to announce any new plans for the Switch 2, nor has it delivered on its previous promise of bringing the "Call of Duty" series to Nintendo platforms.
