The iconic tokusatsu series "Super Sentai" is officially hitting pause after the conclusion of "First Sentai Gojūsha," bringing a nearly half-century run of heroic legends to a temporary close. But don't fret! Toei has already announced a brand-new tokusatsu project, "PROJECT R.E.D.," with its first title being "Space Sheriff Gavan Infinity."
Today (11/30), Asahi Shimbun caught up with long-time producer Shinichiro Shirakura, who shed light on the reasons behind the "Super Sentai" hiatus and offered his thoughts on when the beloved franchise might return.

Shirakura pointed to two major factors:
First, the sheer convenience of streaming platforms has turned older series into formidable new rivals.
Second, the explosive popularity of "mega-crossover" storytelling, much like what we see with American comic book heroes.
These environmental shifts, coupled with the monumental 50th-anniversary milestone, made him realize the "current limits of Sentai." To prevent audience fatigue and ensure the brand's longevity, Toei decided it was time for a "complete re-evaluation." However, he stressed that Sentai isn't ending; it's merely taking a break, hinting at a future return with a fresh new look.

Shirakura reiterated his point: "Sentai isn't over; it's on hiatus." He clarified, "No, I don't believe Sentai is ending. It's a 'break.' While a new program will take over its original broadcast slot, the Sentai brand absolutely has the potential to return later."
He also noted that after media outlets prematurely leaked news of "Sentai's conclusion" in October, the fan reaction was far greater than anticipated, making him realize "just how deeply everyone loves Sentai." However, even if a revival is on the cards and fans are clamoring for it, he believes "it's best to let it rest for at least 10 years." He stressed that both the overall environment and production capabilities need to be fully prepared before the series can make its comeback in a truly fresh form.

He candidly admitted, "We've definitely seen the limits of Sentai. While we've tried various ways to break new ground, reaching the 50th-anniversary milestone clearly signals a need for a fundamental re-think." We can't let this IP merely limp along. The new "PROJECT R.E.D." initiative is our way of integrating elements from various tokusatsu works, aiming to offer audiences something distinct from the Sentai series and challenge the hero styles of a new era.

For now, only the new project and "Space Sheriff Gavan Infinity" have been revealed. It's highly likely that more tokusatsu-related content from the initiative will be announced, so fans should keep an eye out for future official updates.
