Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater Producer Says Remake Future Undecided, MGS4 Port a 'Real Challenge'

After the launch of "Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater," Konami is facing intense fan scrutiny over the future of the beloved series.

In a recent interview with Japanese outlet Real Sound, Metal Gear Solid series producer Ken-ichiro Okamura revealed that Konami is still hashing out its next moves, with no definitive decision on whether to continue the remake train. He even called the highly anticipated "Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots" a "very difficult challenge to implement on modern hardware."

Okamura noted that "MGS Δ" successfully brought the Metal Gear Solid saga to a new generation of players, and he hopes to keep that momentum going. However, he stressed that future projects are still very much in the "conceptual stage."

"The form of the next title hasn't been decided yet," he explained. "It could be another remake, or it could be an entirely new project. We want to find the most suitable way to reinterpret each title, rather than just applying the 'MGS Δ' development approach to every game."

He also spilled that during "MGS Δ"'s development, many original team members had moved on, forcing the company to assemble a fresh crew to get the remake project off the ground. Okamura expressed confidence that the team can both preserve the charm of past titles and meet modern game quality standards, which is why they're actively exploring the series' future direction.

But when the conversation shifted to the question fans have been asking for years – a "MGS4" remake or port – Okamura's tone became noticeably more cautious. He pointed to the PlayStation 3's unique hardware architecture as a massive hurdle:

"To achieve 3D performance with the limited technology available at the time, the PS3 required very specialized programming. As a result, 'MGS4's' codebase is quite unconventional... fully recreating it on modern platforms seems like a real challenge."

Since its 2008 release, "MGS4" has never been ported to other platforms, making it one of the most eagerly anticipated remasters in the series. Despite years of fan pleas for a remake, Okamura's comments suggest this isn't a goal that can be easily achieved anytime soon.

While Konami hasn't dropped any official news on the next steps for the Metal Gear Solid series, Okamura made it clear that the team is actively exploring all viable directions.
