"Deadpool & Wolverine" dominated the global box office in the summer of 2024, shattering multiple records with an astounding gross exceeding $1.3 billion. The film delivered Marvel Studios' most potent response yet to the growing sentiment of "superhero fatigue."
The movie's immense success also underscored a crucial prerequisite for today's audiences to flock to theaters: a film must possess "event-level" appeal. Now, director Shawn Levy has revealed he's already contemplating the possibility of a fourth "Deadpool" installment, a revelation that has fans buzzing.
In a recent interview with Kevin McCarthy of The Playlist, Levy admitted that he has indeed begun conceptualizing the direction for the next Deadpool film.
He discussed his admiration for several iconic trilogies, including "Back to the Future Part III," "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," and "Avengers: Endgame." Levy noted that these films achieved success by building upon years, even decades, of emotional investment between audiences and their characters.
"When you tell a story that has a historical connection, you're already on second base," Levy explained. He pointed out that "Deadpool & Wolverine" resonated profoundly because it served as a "love letter" to the history of 20th Century Fox's superhero films, successfully leveraging years of character legacy. However, he also acknowledged that a subsequent Deadpool movie wouldn't be able to rely on the same nostalgic appeal, necessitating an entirely new approach.
Addressing the challenges of sequels, Levy was candid. "Sequels are really hard. I made three 'Night at the Museum' movies, and every single one of them exhausted me. Knowing how sequels are made, it's inherently stressful because you genuinely want to make them the best they can be."
While "Deadpool 4" remains in its very early conceptual stages, Levy's active consideration of its direction is undoubtedly an exciting signal for fans. Should Ryan Reynolds and Levy collaborate again, the new project is poised to become a significant chapter in the ongoing Deadpool saga.
