"Kōhaku Uta Gassen" Red Team to Feature Eight AKB48 Graduated Members, Including Atsuko Maeda & Yuko Oshima!

Japan's premier music extravaganza, the "Kōhaku Uta Gassen," recently unveiled the lineup for its 76th annual show. As a yearly national obsession, everything from the performing artists and host lineup to the judging panel always sparks major buzz.

Today (12/3), officials announced that AKB48, representing the Red Team, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. But here's the kicker: their performance will include eight graduated members: Atsuko Maeda, Minami Takahashi, Haruna Kojima, Tomomi Itano, Minami Minegishi, Yuko Oshima, Yuki Kashiwagi, and Rino Sashihara, all sharing the stage! This news instantly sent shockwaves through the fandom and became a hot topic.

The returning members include Atsuko Maeda, Minami Takahashi, Haruna Kojima, Tomomi Itano, and Yuko Oshima – essentially the "Kami 7" (Godly Seven) from the 2009 and 2010 Senbatsu elections. The 2011 "Kami 8" also featured Yuki Kashiwagi, who only recently graduated. Rino Sashihara and Minami Minegishi are also hugely popular. All eight have continued to make waves in their respective fields.

▼ The "Kami 8" members from 2011 are back for Kōhaku, with the exceptions of Mayu Watanabe, who graduated and completely left the entertainment industry, and Mariko Shinoda, who recently faced a cheating scandal and divorce.

Of course, AKB48's popularity has seen a dip compared to its heyday. For their 20th anniversary, bringing back these beloved graduated members for a stage like Kōhaku is a savvy move – it's a treat for long-time fans and a way to boost the newer generation. For many, these senpai idols were their original "oshi," so their return is guaranteed to grab fan attention.

For AKB48 fans, seeing these graduated members grace the Kōhaku stage is undoubtedly a huge thrill! If you've got time on New Year's Eve, be sure to tune in and catch this year's "Kōhaku Uta Gassen."
