Yakuza Studio recently dropped a brand-new online promotional video, "That Kind of Game Edition" (あの手のゲーム編), delivering an unexpected marketing stunt for the Yakuza (Ryū ga Gotoku) series by deliberately mimicking smartphone game ads.
The moment the video hit, it sparked massive buzz among players thanks to its intense sense of déjà vu, with many exclaiming, "I've definitely seen this somewhere before!" What started as a seemingly trollish commercial quickly became a hot topic.
While the video ostensibly promotes titles like "Yakuza 0: The Place of Oath Director’s Cut" (龍が如く0 誓いの場所 Director’s Cut), "Yakuza Kiwami," "Yakuza Kiwami 2," and the upcoming "Yakuza Kiwami 3 / Yakuza 3 Gaiden: Dark Ties" (龍が如く 極3 / 龍が如く3外伝 Dark Ties), its opening completely ditches the series' usual narrative style.
The visuals feature side-scrolling action, characters passing through "+3" number gates to multiply their ranks, and hordes of enemies being mowed down – a near-perfect replication of typical mobile game ad tropes. For a moment, it genuinely makes you wonder if the series has launched a bizarre new gameplay mechanic.
As Kiryu Kazuma's numbers multiply and he sweeps through countless foes, the narration suddenly flips. A blunt, sarcastic remark dismisses the entire setup, explicitly calling out the misleading "that kind of game" performance. It then swiftly cuts back to the core charm of the Yakuza series. This stark contrast not only delivers a punchline but also successfully refocuses the audience on the actual games.
Since the video was also released as a YouTube Short, many players stumbled upon it while scrolling. Social media exploded with reactions; some joked they thought it was an April Fool's prank, while others even suggested this "gameplay" surprisingly suits the series and hoped it might become an in-game mini-game.
