Last year, fans went wild for the announcement of A Certain Scientific Railgun Season 4, but that wasn't all! The A Certain Magical Index spinoff, "A Certain Dark Side's Coexistence" (とある暗部の少女共棲), was also confirmed for a TV anime adaptation.
And now, the hype train continues! At today's (2/22) official "A Certain Magical and Scientific Phantasy Sound Attack" event, a new teaser visual, production team, and voice cast details for "A Certain Dark Side's Coexistence" were unveiled, along with a confirmed broadcast window of 2026.
"A Certain Dark Side's Coexistence" (とある暗部の少女共棲) is the latest spinoff novel in the A Certain Magical Index series, first launched in March 2023. It dives deep into Academy City's dark side, focusing on "ITEM," an elite unit composed of four girls, with their leader, Shizuri Mugino, taking center stage. The Japanese edition currently spans six volumes.
The anime production is once again handled by J.C.STAFF, the long-standing studio behind the A Certain Magical Index series. Directing duties fall to Tatsuyuki Nagai, who previously helmed the fan-favorite spinoff A Certain Scientific Railgun, making a triumphant return. Shigeki Kimoto is in charge of character design. Shizuri Mugino will be voiced by the legendary Ami Koshimizu, known for her iconic roles as Holo in Spice and Wolf and Kallen Kōzuki in Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion.
The newly released visual features all the core members of the "ITEM" dark side unit: Shizuri Mugino, Saiai Kinuhata, Frenda Seivelun, and Rikō Takitsubo. Sharp-eyed fans will notice it cleverly mirrors the main visual composition from the original A Certain Scientific Railgun!
