The 20th annual Seiyu Awards, hosted by the Seiyu Awards Executive Committee in Japan, recently held its ceremony, unveiling this year's winners and celebrating the industry's top talent.
Among the honorees was 71-year-old voice acting legend Mayumi Tanaka, who snagged the Best Supporting Voice Actress award for her role as Turbo Granny in the second season of the *Dandadan* anime. She brought the house down with a hilarious acceptance speech, joking, "I think I've got another 10 years of voice acting in me!"
Tanaka earned the award for her performance as *Dandadan*'s Turbo Granny, a spirit who possesses a maneki-neko (beckoning cat) in the series, a form that has made the otherwise terrifying character a fan favorite.
Leaning into the role, Tanaka kicked off her speech by poking fun at herself. "Well, I guess I'm officially a real granny (babaa) now," she quipped, getting a huge laugh from the audience.
"I'm so happy I got to play a role that suits me so perfectly," she continued. She also gave a shout-out to fellow voice acting veteran Masako Nozawa, humbly adding that while she probably couldn't stay active as long as Nozawa, "I'm hoping to stick around for another 10 years or so." She wrapped up her speech with a lighthearted "Thank you all so much for today!" that kept the energy in the room high.
Of course, Mayumi Tanaka is the iconic voice behind some of anime's most legendary characters, including Monkey D. Luffy in *One Piece*, Krillin in *Dragon Ball*, and Kirimaru in *Nintama Rantaro*—roles she has held for over two decades. With a career spanning countless titles, it's no wonder the 71-year-old can joke about "maybe 10 more years."
For millions of fans, Tanaka's voice *is* the character. Here's hoping she stays healthy so we can continue to hear her bring our favorite heroes to life for years to come.
