Marvel's "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" Poster Sparks Plagiarism Debate as "Demon Slayer" and "Kagurabachi" Fans Clash

Marvel's "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" recently dropped its fresh new key visual, but it's unexpectedly ignited a fiery debate across anime and comic communities. Fans are pointing out striking similarities between the poster's composition and scenes from "Demon Slayer"'s "Infinity Castle Arc" and panels from "Kagurabachi," sparking a heated discussion over whether it's a "homage" or outright "plagiarism."

The controversy kicked off with "Demon Slayer" fans, who argue that the poster's "eye close-up with mirror reflection" design is eerily similar to Akaza's iconic moment in the "Infinity Castle Arc" visual. They claim the emotional intensity and narrative presentation are practically identical.

However, Marvel enthusiasts are pushing back, noting that this type of composition has been a long-standing visual trope, appearing as early as the 2004 "Spider-Man 2" poster and even in the works of legendary comic artist John Romita Sr. back in the 1980s.

Meanwhile, as the poster made its debut at CinemaCon 2026, "Kagurabachi" readers also jumped into the fray. Some fans noticed that the poster's triangular composition, with the protagonist at the top and enemies gathered below, almost perfectly mirrors a panel from "Kagurabachi" Chapter 77. Given that both works feature sword elements, and the poster's villainous organization, The Hand, is also involved, some viewers suspect a direct reference.

Yet, another perspective suggests these similarities are more akin to "artistic intertextuality." In recent years, mutual homages between American and Japanese comics have become increasingly common. For instance, DC's "Absolute Batman" series has frequently referenced classic scenes from "Chainsaw Man" and "Death Note." Adding to the speculation, "Kagurabachi" author Takeru Hokazono visited Marvel headquarters in 2025, meeting creators like Joe Kelly and Tradd Moore, leading many to wonder if there's an unspoken understanding or even an authorized nod between the two camps.

"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" is slated for release on July 31, 2026.
