Foreigner Tries "Simple Japanese Dish," Creates Terrifying Steamed Egg — Japanese Netizens Are Freaked Out!

A recent cooking video, touted as a "simple Japanese recipe," has gone absolutely viral online. But instead of inspiring home cooks, its bizarre methods have left viewers scratching their heads, with Japanese netizens exclaiming, "I've lived my whole life and never seen a Japanese dish like this!"

An international creator, known as "Mindful DIY," recently uploaded a cooking video to X, captioning it, "Trying out a simple Japanese recipe!" The clip quickly went viral, leaving countless Japanese netizens utterly bewildered.

The video kicks off with the creator grabbing a bowl of raw eggs. Then, in a move that immediately throws viewers for a loop, they pull out a pair of scissors and start snip-snip-snipping at the egg yolks (?!). As if that wasn't wild enough, hot water is then poured directly into the egg mixture, followed by a furious, high-speed whisking session. Finally, the concoction is placed on a steaming rack, lid on, and left to cook.

▼The intro claims, "My Japanese friend taught me this," then proceeds to snip the egg yolk...

▼Whisking furiously, then off to the steamer!!

Once steamed into a solid "egg block," it's drenched in a generous amount of sauce and then sliced into cake-like portions. Voila! Or... not?

Upon seeing this mysterious dish, self-proclaimed "Japanese cuisine," many Japanese netizens' reactions quickly escalated from confusion to outright horror: "I'm Japanese, and I've never once seen a dish like this in my life." Another, questioning their entire existence, wrote, "I don't know... what is this... it's terrifying."

Some speculated it might have been an attempt at "chawanmushi" (savory steamed egg custard). However, traditional chawanmushi is typically made with dashi broth and features various ingredients and a specific seasoning logic, making this viral version a far cry from the familiar dish.

While the origin of this "recipe" remains a total mystery, the scissor-snipping egg yolk technique is truly baffling. One thing's for sure: while this might not be Japanese cuisine, it has definitely succeeded in creating an entirely new genre of "confusing cuisine." Seriously, who was this "Japanese friend" who taught them this?!
