Some talents shine bright even before they hit the big time! A recent viral sensation on Japanese X (formerly Twitter) has fans buzzing: it turns out Nagano, the wildly popular illustrator behind the global phenomenon "Chiikawa," actually submitted a design for Kagoshima Prefecture's Shibushi City official mascot contest way back before their rise to fame.
One netizen shared how hearing stories like "I thought it was an unknown artist's work, but it turned out to be a genuine Da Vinci" reminded them of Shibushi City's official mascot, "Shibushi Shishimaru."
And guess what? This local icon was none other than Nagano's winning design from the 2013 national mascot competition!
Shibushi Shishimaru is a charming character that blends a samurai helmet, a lion, and local elements. When the national mascot contest was held, Nagano wasn't yet the household name they are today. This means the design wasn't chosen for its creator's fame, but purely for its endearing look and incredibly polished execution, which won over the judges unanimously.
Netizens are calling this a "mind-blowing" revelation! Comments poured in: "The person who picked Nagano's design back then had incredible foresight – they deserve a promotion!" and "Whoever discovered this genius is amazing! Shishimaru is so cute."
Beyond its adorable looks, "Shibushi" cleverly combines the place name "Shibushi" with the pronunciation of "Bushi" (samurai). Plus, according to official lore, while Shibushi Shishimaru is technically 7 years old, that translates to a human age of 22 – meaning it can legally drink shochu! And it always carries a little piglet. This "gap moe" — a cute exterior hiding a touch of real-world grit — perfectly aligns with the "Chiikawa" universe.
This buzz has also sparked a frenzy for Shibushi Shishimaru merchandise and LINE stickers! It's more than just a delightful rediscovery of a famous creator's early work; it's the ultimate proof that true talent and skill will always find their spotlight!
