Yesterday was Mother's Day, that special time of year dedicated to all the amazing moms out there! Did you get to celebrate with yours?
While many brands use Mother's Day for heartwarming promotions, the official Japanese Final Fantasy X account decided to take a slightly different approach. Their Mother's Day greeting featured a truly "impactful" scene from "Final Fantasy VII" starring Sephiroth, and let's just say it sent players into absolute hysterics, with many exclaiming, "This idea is pure evil!" The post quickly went viral.

On May 10th, the official X account posted:
"Today is Mother's Day. For those who usually find it hard to express, take this chance to visit your mom and convey your gratitude #FF7"
The kicker? The accompanying image was that iconic scene from "Final Fantasy VII" featuring Sephiroth and his "mother," Jenova.
Any "FF7" fan knows that Sephiroth's "mother" is actually Jenova, the cosmic entity responsible for countless tragedies. He's got a major misunderstanding about his lineage, as Jenova is definitely not his biological mom. Naturally, this post instantly blew up the internet.

Jenova, for reference.
And his actual biological mother, Lucrecia Crescent.
Players immediately lost it, with comments like: "Is the official account obsessed with meme-ing Sephiroth lately?" "Why pick the absolute worst mother-son relationship in 'FF' history?!" "Hearing 'I'm going to see my mom' has never made me think 'PLEASE DON'T!' until now." "Connecting this image to Mother's Day? That's some evil genius-level thinking, LOL."

Others chimed in with: "That's not even your mom, and she's not human!" and "Posting this for Mother's Day? Not exactly feeling the festive cheer, haha."
Many also pointed out that the official account had much safer options: "They could've at least gone with Aerith..." "Seriously, wouldn't Aerith have been a better choice?!"

Meanwhile, another group of players is already dreading next month's Father's Day, quipping: "What kind of disaster awaits us on Father's Day...?" and "So, what's the plan for Sephiroth's Father's Day?"
The fact that the official account deliberately used old-school "FF7" graphics instead of the shiny new "FF7 Remake" visuals also earned praise from veteran players who appreciated the "deep cut": "They intentionally avoided the Remake graphics? Big props for that, haha."
The post is still sparking discussions on X, with many players agreeing that the official account definitely knew what kind of reaction this image would provoke. All we can say is, the "Final Fantasy VII" team successfully delivered an "Emotional Damage" Mother's Day memory this year!
