For over three decades, the legendary boxing manga Hajime no Ippo has captivated generations, with its fiery storyline still winning hearts today. Many of us practically grew up with Ippo and the gang!
And guess what? Creator George Morikawa isn't just a manga master; he's also a prolific Gunpla builder, often sharing his awesome creations on social media. His latest masterpiece? A custom "Gelgoog (Cannon Type)" complete with a meticulously crafted diorama! Morikawa-sensei even gave a detailed breakdown of his build, leaving fans absolutely stunned and sparking a massive buzz online!
Despite his passion for Gunpla, Morikawa-sensei hilariously admitted, "Before I even opened the box, I had no idea a 'Gelgoog Cannon Type' even existed."
He continued, "Since I had the option for both standard and Cannon types, I figured, why not go for the Cannon? Other builders' work is just insane, so I ended up borrowing a little bit here and a little bit there, and it turned into a total hodgepodge." He also shared some progress shots of his build.
Morikawa-sensei posted multiple photos, adding, "I took shots from above, from behind, everywhere. It felt like it was lacking close-combat weapons, so I wanted to give it a naginata. I split the weapon into two pieces and mounted them on the shoulders. The idea is they combine when needed. While building was a blast, once it's done, all I can see are the rough edges. It's pretty disheartening. Still got so much to learn!"
Even with Morikawa-sensei's humble self-critique, fans absolutely flooded the comments with praise: "That dual beam naginata is so original, and the panel lining is insane...!" "He totally nails the world-building and color coordination." "Morikawa-sensei is truly a master of overall color schemes and balance; this one looks super cool too." "The colors and the ruined background are a perfect match, absolutely awesome!"
In a truly Morikawa-sensei move, he even snapped a pic of his Gunpla alongside a standee of Made in Abyss author Akihito Tsukushi. Fans got a good chuckle out of that cheeky touch!
If you're digging Morikawa-sensei's work, be sure to follow his X! Besides updates on his manga, you'll find plenty of his Gunpla building adventures there!
