Could the "Resident Evil" series finally make its way to Japan? That's the burning question fans are buzzing about after Masato Kumazawa, producer of "Resident Evil Requiem," dropped a major hint in an interview with Japanese outlet Futaman. He revealed that Capcom has actually tossed around the idea of a Japan-based setting multiple times internally, suggesting it "might appear at some point in the future."

Kumazawa noted that for Japanese "Resident Evil" fans, a local setting is a common daydream, and he's no exception. He pointed out that since the "Resident Evil" development team is primarily based in Japan, it's only natural for team members to have considered such possibilities. While Japan hasn't officially been the main stage for a mainline entry yet, he's definitely not ruling it out for the future.
This revelation immediately brings to mind Konami's recent "Silent Hill f." That game boldly ditched the series' iconic American small-town backdrop for a Japanese setting, introducing fresh characters and a new narrative direction. It still managed to grab the attention of both new and veteran players, proving to many horror game fans that even classic series can break new ground in unfamiliar locations, as long as the core atmosphere and terrifying design remain solid.

However, Kumazawa was quick to emphasize that even if "Resident Evil" does venture to Japan, the series' core elements won't be sacrificed. He assured fans that the team wouldn't compromise on the characters, plot developments, or the spirit that defines "Resident Evil," ensuring the long-standing hallmarks of the franchise remain intact.
At the same time, he admitted that if the series keeps churning out the same type of games, players might eventually get bored. That's why Capcom is always looking to challenge itself with new ideas. This means that while the essence of "Resident Evil" will be preserved, the development team is still open to shaking things up with changes in setting, narrative, and gameplay.
"Resident Evil Requiem" has already shown the series' dedication to nostalgia and classic elements with Leon's return and Raccoon City connections. If the story truly heads to Japan in the future, the big challenge for Capcom will be how to maintain that unmistakable "Resident Evil" vibe in an entirely new landscape.
