The RPG series "Dragon Quest" celebrated its 40th anniversary at the end of May, and the official team finally unveiled new details for Dragon Quest XII. However, not only have the subtitle and logo been revamped, but the entire story direction has also been overhauled. The original title, "Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate," has been changed to "Dragon Quest XII: The Dawning of an End," essentially signaling a complete restart.
Recently, at a Square Enix shareholder meeting, a shareholder directly questioned the apparent scrapping and reworking of "DQ12," demanding a satisfactory explanation from the company. Square Enix, however, did not directly address the concerns, sparking widespread discussion among players and investors.

"Dragon Quest XII" was first announced in 2021 under the title "Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate." However, on May 27, 2026, during the annual "Dragon Quest Day" event familiar to players, the official announcement revealed a significant overhaul for the title.
According to currently available information, the game has not only abandoned its original "dark, mature style" direction, but its subtitle has also been changed to "Dragon Quest XII: The Dawning of an End." The overall direction is virtually equivalent to a complete re-development. Many players believe this is more than just an adjustment; it's akin to "starting over from scratch."

During the shareholder meeting, a shareholder directly asked the company: "DQ12 was announced in 2021, but five years later, it's being remade from scratch. Isn't this just throwing development costs down the drain? We hope the company can provide an acceptable explanation to shareholders and clarify the current development status."
In response, Square Enix merely stated: "A mainline numbered title like 'Dragon Quest' carries immense responsibility. We must plan our market strategy carefully and create a truly excellent product."
However, this reply did not specify the actual progress or address the cost implications of the development restart, leading many players to feel that the core question was not answered.

The shareholder meeting dialogue was compiled by Japanese gaming media outlets. Given that "Dragon Quest XII" has been in development for years and is now almost entirely scrapped and remade, it is widely believed that the substantial human resources and capital invested previously have become sunk costs. Therefore, this is no longer just a matter of players being concerned about game content, but rather an issue involving corporate management judgment and financial oversight, which explains why it was raised by shareholders at the meeting.
Many Japanese netizens believe that even without disclosing detailed development content, the company could at least explain things like: the decision to incur short-term losses for the long-term development of the "Dragon Quest" series, whether losses from the rework have been treated as special losses, and whether the new version of "DQ12" is currently developing normally. Even a simple statement like: "The new version is currently progressing smoothly according to the company's plan" could have reassured shareholders.
However, Square Enix provided no concrete information, which only generated more questions from the public.

The shareholder who raised the "Dragon Quest XII" question later posted on X, clarifying that their true intent was to inquire about the company's management rationale behind the rework decision, rather than simply asking about game progress. As for Square Enix's full response at the shareholder meeting, the official record will be compiled and edited by the company and is expected to be published on its official website later.
For shareholders, the primary concern is what results the enormous investment of capital will yield; for players, after a long wait, the question is whether this new title, carrying the banner of a national RPG, can truly deliver on expectations.
Until the official team is willing to disclose more information, the various questions surrounding "Dragon Quest XII" will likely continue to be a hot topic within the player community.
Note: Financial figures and earnings forecasts should be confirmed through the company’s official announcements.
