Nintendo's New Kyoto R&D Hub, "Technology Development Building," Slated for 2029 Completion, Expanding Software and Hardware R&D

Nintendo announced on June 25th, via a press release titled "Regarding the Construction of the Technology Development Building," that its new R&D facility, previously known as the "Headquarters Second Development Building (tentative name)," has been officially renamed the "Technology Development Building." The company also unveiled the latest conceptual design for the building.

The newly constructed "Technology Development Building" is considered a significant investment by Nintendo, preparing its R&D framework for decades to come. Beyond game development, this new facility is expected to further boost development capabilities in areas such as network services, server operations, and next-generation hardware technologies.

Nintendo stated that the new facility is located on land acquired from Kyoto City in 2022 and is currently under construction. The provisional name, "Headquarters Second Development Building (tentative name)," has now been officially confirmed as the "Technology Development Building" (技術開発棟).

According to public information, the "Technology Development Building" is planned to be nine stories above ground and one story below, with completion anticipated in March 2029. Once operational, the building will not only provide office space for developers but also house essential R&D infrastructure, including server equipment necessary for game and hardware development.

Nintendo affirmed its commitment to continuously invest resources to strengthen its research and development environment, positioning this facility as a crucial hub for long-term technological R&D.

According to data released when Nintendo acquired the land in 2022, the site spans approximately 10,028.55 square meters. It is strategically located between Nintendo's main headquarters in Kyoto and the Nintendo Headquarters Development Building, effectively connecting Nintendo's entire R&D complex in Kyoto.

In recent years, Nintendo has not only launched the Switch 2 and subsequent Switch series products but has also continuously expanded its software and hardware R&D scale.

The newly constructed "Technology Development Building" is also seen as a crucial investment by Nintendo, preparing its R&D framework for the coming decades. Beyond game development, this new facility is expected to further enhance development capabilities in areas such as network services, server operations, and next-generation hardware technologies.

The direct adoption of "Technology Development Building" in its name signifies Nintendo's intention to establish it as a vital hub for core technology and R&D resources, serving as a cornerstone for supporting next-generation products and services.
