Sony Interactive Entertainment's announcement that it will cease PlayStation 5 disc production by 2028 has reignited discussions about the future of physical games and digital licenses. As the console market increasingly shifts towards an all-digital future, game preservation has become a growing concern, with Frank Cifaldi, Director of the Video Game History Foundation, directly stating that piracy has become virtually the only viable method for game preservation.
Responding to a Bluesky post that called piracy "the only remaining form of media preservation in the game space," Cifaldi stated:
While PC gaming has long experienced a decline in physical releases, its open platform and backward compatibility offer legal preservation avenues like GOG. In contrast, PlayStation currently lacks similar solutions, suggesting that much of the related preservation work will likely continue to fall to unofficial communities.
