DC Comics' "Absolute Universe" continues to reimagine classic characters with a darker twist, and the latest installment, "Absolute Batman" #22, has officially revealed a stunning truth about this world's Harley Quinn.

While readers initially believed she was simply a new version of Harley, distinct from the main universe and allied with Batman, the new story reveals she is not the original Harley fans know. Instead, she is the daughter of the "first generation Harley" and The Joker, making her the second iteration of the character.
In this issue, Harley confides in Batman about her past. She explains that her mother, a neurologist, initially worked for Jack Grimm but later decided to oppose him after witnessing horrific truths. However, as the narrative unfolds, this mother is revealed to be "Dr. Arkham," the character in this universe who truly corresponds to the main universe's original Harley Quinn.

The bigger twist is that Dr. Arkham's past hatred for Jack Grimm had long since transformed into adoration and love. Jack Grimm is, in fact, Harley's father—the Joker of this universe. Therefore, the Harley that readers have been following is not the traditional Harley Quinn, but rather the daughter of The Joker and the "first generation Harley."
This retcon further complicates her relationship with Batman. Unlike her previous portrayals, often as Batman's adversary, the "Absolute Universe" Harley is presented as an anti-establishment figure who refuses to be defined by her fate or lineage. Her core belief is to not let brutal truths dominate her, even when confronted with them.

In contrast, The Joker attempts to manipulate narratives, twisting others' perceptions through fear and lies. Consequently, Harley is now not just an ally to Batman, but potentially a crucial figure in unraveling The Joker and Scarecrow's psychological manipulations.
