Studio Ghibli and Tokuma Shoten’s timeless animated classic, My Neighbor Totoro, directed by Hayao Miyazaki and released in 1988, beautifully captures the idyllic Japanese countryside before its economic boom. To this day, the film continues to resonate deeply, stirring a sense of nostalgia in countless viewers.
Recently, Japanese X user Osuniki (@okitabakari) shared a memorable conversation he had with a friend, who also grew up in a rural area. His friend asked, "At what point in My Neighbor Totoro did you realize this story was set a long, long time ago?" This unique question stuck with Osuniki and has since sparked a lively debate online.
Many netizens confessed that before seeing the tweet, they had always assumed My Neighbor Totoro was set in contemporary Japan, specifically around 1988, the year it was released. Some even found it hard to believe, as their own childhood homes and environments perfectly mirrored those depicted in the film, making the 1988 setting a natural assumption.
For these users, seeing grandmothers in traditional work pants and headscarves, or families using old-fashioned telephones, felt completely normal and not at all out of place in their everyday lives at the time.

However, other eagle-eyed viewers pieced together the era through subtle details in the everyday objects. Some pointed out that the presence of vintage trucks and tricycles was a dead giveaway, subtly hinting that the story was likely set around the 1950s.

Another user mentioned that the real "aha!" moment for them came when they noticed the phone wasn't a black rotary dial model, but an even older, wall-mounted telephone, which really drove home the historical gap.

As confirmed by Hayao Miyazaki in later interviews and official art books, the world of My Neighbor Totoro is indeed not set in the 1980s when the film premiered, but rather in the 1950s—specifically the Showa 30s—an era before televisions became widespread.
So, when you first watched My Neighbor Totoro, did you ever realize the film was actually set much further back in time?
