Beyond the decades-long global dominance of collectible card games like Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokémon, a slew of IPs have recently jumped into the TCG arena. We're talking Godzilla, Ultraman, and even Hololive, all dropping their own card games.
Last year, Bandai launched the GUNDAM CARD GAME, quickly building a buzz thanks to its iconic IP. But just shy of its first anniversary this July, the official team dropped its first-ever ban and restriction list yesterday, July 11th. What really caught players' eyes was the announcement openly admitting fundamental issues in the game's rule design that made certain strategies overwhelmingly powerful.
First off, ban and restriction lists are totally normal in any card game. Certain cards, due to their design, can become absolute powerhouses in matches, leading players to flood their decks with them and completely wreck the game's balance. We've seen it happen in Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokémon alike.
The official implementation of the ban list is set for July 25, 2026.

While such restrictions are par for the course for players, the official announcement also stated:
Regarding the current game environment, where fast-paced decks like Blue-Purple and Blue-Green builds are overly dominant, we believe the root cause isn't just individual cards, but also inherent factors within the game's rules themselves. Consequently, we are exploring fundamental adjustments, including modifications to the game's core rules.
However, since such fundamental rule changes require extensive planning and testing, this current ban and restriction list adjustment will serve as a temporary measure to maintain balance in the game environment until formal rule revisions are implemented.
Should game rule adjustments be confirmed in the future, we will re-evaluate the current ban and restriction list and make further adjustments as necessary.

After all, tackling such fundamental design flaws a year post-launch is no easy feat. Even with the new ban list, there's no guarantee it'll effectively fix things, leaving many players worried about the impact on competitive play and Bandai's future commitment.
Of course, rule revisions are a common occurrence in card games. But given Bandai has released multiple Gundam TCGs in the past, this GUNDAM CARD GAME marks a comeback after many years. It's crucial for this game to thrive long-term in an era saturated with card games.
