Anya Taylor-Joy on "The Hunt for Gollum": Admits She Only Watched "Lord of the Rings" During Pandemic, Thought She Had to Pick Sides with "Harry Potter"

Anya Taylor-Joy is set to join the new "Lord of the Rings" film, "The Hunt for Gollum," portraying an original elf character named Théron.

This character, not found in J.R.R. Tolkien's original works, was created specifically for the prequel, which Andy Serkis is directing. Théron is described as a Sindar elf from Mirkwood, serving as a trusted and formidable agent for King Thranduil.

In an interview with Variety, Taylor-Joy revealed that she only watched Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings" films during the COVID-19 pandemic and is now preparing to read the original novels.

"I'm actually about to start reading the novels now, but I had this misconception as a child that you could only be a 'Harry Potter' fan or a 'Lord of the Rings' fan. Nobody told me that; I completely made it up myself," Taylor-Joy explained. "Thankfully, during COVID, I watched all the 'Lord of the Rings' movies and realized you can actually like both, and you should."

Speaking about Théron without divulging too many details, Taylor-Joy shared, "It's really fun. I mean, if my tombstone could say 'deadly elf,' I'd feel like I'd done pretty well on this planet. So yeah, I'm really looking forward to it."

However, Théron's introduction has already sparked fan discussion, with some viewers drawing comparisons to Tauriel, an original character from "The Hobbit" trilogy. The film will delve into Gollum's pursuit by various factions prior to the events of "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" and is slated for a North American release on December 17, 2027.
