Yasuki Tanaka's suspense manga "Summer Time Rendering" (サマータイムレンダ) wrapped up back in February 2021, and at the time, it was simultaneously announced that an anime, a real-life escape game, and a live-action adaptation were all in the works. The TV anime then premiered in 2022, exclusively streaming on Disney+.
Now, in the late hours of July 22nd, the live-action project has been officially confirmed as a feature film! Ken Ninomiya, known for directing "Chihuahua-chan," is set to helm the project, with a projected release in 2027.
"Summer Time Rendering" (サマータイムレンダ) began its serialization in Shonen Jump+ in 2017, concluding with 13 tankobon volumes.
The story is set on the fictional Hitogashima island in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan, a tiny locale with a population of only about 700. It follows protagonist Shinpei Ajiro, who returns to his hometown of Hitogashima after the death of his childhood friend, Ushio Kofune. He soon finds himself entangled in a terrifying incident linked to an ancient island legend: the "Shadow Sickness," kicking off a thrilling and eerie mystery.
The official X (formerly Twitter) account also posted the announcement:
"The live-action 'Summer Time Rendering' movie is confirmed for a 2027 release! Ken Ninomiya will direct! More updates will be shared via the official X account! We chose July 22nd – the day the story begins – to finally make this official announcement. Stay tuned!"
The choice of July 22nd for the announcement is a clever nod to the original work. In the story, protagonist Shinpei Ajiro possesses the ability to loop back in time to July 22, 2018, after dying – making it the very starting point of the narrative. A neat little Easter egg for fans!
Director Ken Ninomiya boasts an impressive filmography, including "The Virgin Psychics," "Chihuahua-chan," and the live-action drama adaptation of Osamu Tezuka's classic "Apollo's Song." His track record certainly builds anticipation for how he'll bring this popular series to life.
It's actually been five years since the live-action adaptation was first announced, so fans will be thrilled to finally have a release window! Details on the cast and further specifics are still under wraps, so keep an eye on official channels for more updates.
