“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” Drives Soaring Sales for Two Steam Games; Sony's Strategy to Halt Single-Player PC Ports Questioned Again

Following the release of the Marvel film "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" and the resulting surge in character popularity, two "Marvel's Spider-Man" series games from PlayStation have seen significant sales growth on Steam.

Specifically, "Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered" and "Marvel's Spider-Man 2" have both entered the top ten on Steam's global bestseller list, ranking alongside long-standing popular titles like "Dota 2" and "Counter-Strike 2."

Notably, just a week prior, both games were outside the top 100, making their rapid ascent particularly striking. Steam's bestseller list is ranked by revenue, not units sold. Currently, "Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered" is offered at a 33% discount, and "Marvel's Spider-Man 2" is slashed by 60%, yet both managed to break into the top ten. This indicates that the film's release has indeed generated a significant wave of purchases.

In contrast, neither title currently ranks in the top ten on the U.S. PlayStation Store. This has prompted renewed scrutiny of Sony's strategy to scale back PC releases. It is rumored that PlayStation, due to underperforming sales of some titles, may cease porting its single-player first-party games to PC in the future, instead only releasing multiplayer and live-service titles simultaneously on Steam.

Recently, "Saros" is believed to be skipping a PC release. Conversely, the multiplayer-focused "Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls" is slated for a simultaneous launch on PS5 and PC. While the short-term sales surge for "Spider-Man" alone may not be enough to completely alter Sony's direction, it at least demonstrates that different titles should be evaluated individually for market potential, rather than broadly abandoning PC port opportunities for single-player games.
