Now, a new fan theory suggests that Peter and Ned's signature handshake might be more than just a symbol of friendship — it could be the magical key to breaking the memory spell from "Spider-Man: No Way Home."
In "No Way Home," Peter asked Doctor Strange to cast a spell that would make everyone forget Peter Parker's existence, all to prevent the multiverse from collapsing. At the conclusion of "Brand New Day," Peter reintroduces himself to Ned at a grocery store, then initiates their familiar handshake. Ned seemingly completes the entire sequence instinctively, before exclaiming "Peter!" The screen then cuts to black, leaving audiences to speculate whether his memories have been restored.
Some fans have further speculated, recalling that Ned used a Sling Ring to open portals in "No Way Home," demonstrating his potential for magic. The two also performed this same handshake during that period. Therefore, it's theorized that the gesture itself might have been imbued with magic, and when Peter and Ned complete the handshake again, it inadvertently shakes or even breaks the memory spell.
Jacob Batalon, who plays Ned, has intentionally left room for interpretation. He stated that Ned might have completed the handshake purely out of muscle memory, or simply repeated the name Peter had just said.
