Sony Pictures once envisioned a cinematic universe built around Andrew Garfield's iteration of Spider-Man, with "Daredevil" creator Drew Goddard slated to direct the highly anticipated "Sinister Six." Now, previously unseen concept art for the canceled film has surfaced, revealing a wild premise that would have taken Spider-Man far from New York City and into Marvel's iconic Savage Land.
Both leaked Sony internal emails from the era and the recently unveiled concept art suggest that one iteration of the script would have incorporated elements such as the Savage Land, time-travel portals, and dinosaurs.
Concept artist Victor Martinez shared images depicting Spider-Man plummeting from a great height towards a prehistoric island, with what appear to be missiles launching at him from below. This aesthetic marks a stark departure from previous Spider-Man films, which were predominantly set against the backdrop of New York City.
"Sinister Six" was poised to be a cornerstone of Sony's planned Spider-Man cinematic universe. Rumors at the time even circulated that the studio was eyeing stars like Daniel Craig and Matthew McConaughey for roles. The film's envisioned tone reportedly mirrored that of "Suicide Squad," aiming to follow a group of morally ambiguous villains, with Spider-Man serving as their primary antagonist.
However, these ambitious plans ultimately unraveled after Sony was hit by a massive cyberattack in 2014. Coincidentally, Garfield recently expressed his desire for a "completely out of the ordinary, strange enough" story if he were to ever reprise his role as Spider-Man. Given the newly revealed concepts of the Savage Land, dinosaurs, and time travel, it appears the original "Sinister Six" might have perfectly fit his unconventional criteria.
