Spoilers are officially lifted: Sony Pictures tonight formally ended the spoiler embargo for "Spider-Man: Brand New Day." Concurrently, Variety magazine published a full spoiler interview with Sadie Sink, who portrays the mutant antagonist Jean Grey in the film, and unveiled Sink's official first-look stills.
One of the most amusing moments from the interview was Sink's recollection of reading the V-Max twist in the script. She admitted, "At first I was like, 'Is her sister hiding in the vents?' (laughs). Then I kept reading, and suddenly I realized, 'Oh my God, it's actually better that there's no meaningful explanation behind it.' I remember in the original script, there were more lines about discovering that V-Max was nothing. Jean originally had some very explicit lines. But on the day of filming, I felt like, 'I think I just need to give a look.' It's clearer that way, it doesn't need to be said. I love how that just unleashed her, unleashed that rage of realizing there was no meaning to it."
Sink continued, "I think she kind of knew her sister was gone, but she was holding onto this last thread, even though she knew the hope of her sister being alive was very slim. So this message, for her, was like the final straw, or the ultimate confirmation."
Sink also explained that while she knew Jean Grey was positioned as an antagonist, she didn't truly play her as one. "It was important to give Jean a backstory, especially considering her actions in the film. She has a lot of flaws. When the audience meets her, she's in a unique situation because I don't think she intends to hurt people, but she's been hurt herself, so she only knows how to react that way. So, giving her that backstory and motivation was a very solid foundation. Marvel told me I was playing a villain, but not a truly evil one, which is why I interpreted her this way. I didn't want to lean into creating a villainous aura, because from Jean's perspective, these actions are completely reasonable. What I mean is, I also agree that she's not truly evil."
Sink also revealed that "Stranger Things" creators, the Duffer brothers, were among the first people she "leaked" the news to after landing the role. "Honestly, I definitely told more than three people. There are always trusted people in the industry I can talk to. Anyway, my family knew, and the Duffer brothers were among the first few I told because I was filming with them at the time. They've obviously had a huge impact on my career and life, and they've watched me grow up, so I wanted them to know what I was doing next, and they were all very excited."
Sink added, "They immediately said, 'This is an amazing role, you absolutely have to do it!' And they said, 'It's perfect, you'll be great!' Things like that. They felt the role was a great fit for me, and I trusted their opinion because they love comics and know these characters well, so their input was very helpful." However, Sink emphasized that within the "Stranger Things" crew, she only confided in the Duffer brothers and not the other actors.
Furthermore, in a separate interview with Vanity Fair, Sink disclosed that the new "X-Men" film is expected to begin filming next year, targeting a 2028 release.
