PS5's "Marvel's Wolverine" Extended Gameplay Sparks Backlash; Director Responds, Says Goal Isn't to Appease All Complaints

Insomniac Games' upcoming PS5 exclusive, "Marvel's Wolverine," recently unveiled an extended gameplay demonstration, showcasing story segments, character interactions, traversal, combat systems, and a Sentinel boss battle. However, the footage quickly ignited widespread discussion and criticism across social media.

Key points of contention among players include Logan tracking the Hand via a red scent trail, which many compared to the ubiquitous "yellow paint" visual cues used to guide players in modern games. The intense argument scene between Wolverine and Sabretooth also drew criticism from some users who found the voice acting unnatural.

Regarding the Sentinel boss fight, some even drew comparisons to the 2007 PS2 title "Ben 10: Protector of Earth," while others felt it too closely resembled the 2009 game "X-Men Origins: Wolverine."

Addressing the backlash, Game Director Mike Daly told TheGamer that Insomniac is "pretty used to" such reactions, describing it as par for the course when developing popular superhero titles. He added that while the team knows they can make great games that many people will love, they can't stop critics from finding things to complain about.

Daly stated that he is "pretty comfortable" with the situation because the game's goal "isn't necessarily to do the things that people are complaining about." He emphasized that their true objective is "to be completely focused on making the best game for this character."
