Less than half an hour after Rockstar Games premiered the "Extended Preview" for "GTA 6" on Netflix, players quickly compiled a list of the 14 songs featured in the video.
Analyzing the tracklist, it's clear that Rockstar didn't focus on any single era. Instead, they've curated a soundtrack that spans from the 1970s all the way to the 2020s, essentially building Leonida's musical identity with half a century of popular music.
For players familiar with the "GTA" series, this song selection approach aligns perfectly with the franchise's tradition. Historically, the games have allowed rock, pop, hip-hop, electronic, country, and Latin music to coexist across various in-game radio stations. This time, Rockstar is showcasing this immense musical breadth even before release, right in the preview video.
The 14 songs featured this time include:
The Bellamy Brothers – "Let Your Love Flow"
Released in 1976 on their album of the same name, this lighthearted country-pop track perfectly complements the highway scenery of Leonida and evokes a quintessential 1970s American vibe.
Cliff Richard – "Devil Woman"
Also released in 1976, this track from the album "I'm Nearly Famous" describes a dangerously alluring woman. Its placement during Lucia's appearance easily draws parallels to her assertive and perilous nature.
Captain & Tennille – "But I Think It's a Dream"
Featured on their 1980 album "Keeping Our Love Warm," this song's soft, dreamy pop vibe creates a stark contrast with the game's violent and chaotic world.
Phil Collins: "Against All Odds"
Performed as the theme song for the 1984 film "Against All Odds," this is a love ballad about losing a partner and yearning for reconciliation. Considering Jason and Lucia's relationship will be central to the story, the lyrics naturally become particularly poignant.
Depeche Mode: "People Are People"
Released in 1984 and featured on the album "Some Great Reward," the song itself questions why humans generate hatred due to their differences. This theme aligns perfectly with "GTA's" long-standing satire of societal contradictions.
Def Leppard: "Love Bites"
Featured on their classic 1987 album "Hysteria," this track delves into the pain and insecurity within love. If "GTA 6" indeed makes "trust" a crucial theme for Jason and Lucia, this song easily draws connections to their narrative.
Prefab Sprout: "Cars and Girls"
From their 1988 album "From Langley Park to Memphis," the song inherently reflects on the pop culture imagination of "cars, women, and the American Dream." Its inclusion in a game titled "Grand Theft Auto" would be particularly intriguing.
Birdman & Lil Wayne "Pop Bottles"
Released in 2007 and featured on Birdman's album "5 * Stunna," this track is filled with themes of flaunting wealth, nightlife, and success, perfectly aligning with the "GTA" fantasy of getting rich through crime.
Kodak Black "Skrilla"
Launched in 2014, "Skrilla" centers on street life, money, and crime culture, providing a modern Florida hip-hop sound that complements Leonida's vibe.
!!! "Off The Grid" ft. Meah Pace
Featured on their 2019 album "Wallop," this track blends dance-punk and electronic dance music, making it perfect for nightclubs, parties, and urban nightlife scenes.
Chimbala x Omega "Se Me Nota"
Released in 2021, this track features a strong Latin urban music flavor, reflecting Leonida's world setting, which is influenced by Caribbean and Latin cultures.
Elderbrook & Bob Moses "Inner Light"
Released in 2021, this track's electronic sound and introspective mood offer a distinct vibe, contrasting with the crime-ridden, party-heavy playlist.
Aluna & Jayda G – "Mine O' Mine"
Debuting in 2022 and later featured on Aluna's 2023 album "MYCELiUM," this track continues the modern house and dance elements, perfectly suiting "GTA"'s iconic nightclub culture.
Sexyy Red & Tay Keith – "Pound Town"
Released in 2023 and included on "Hood Hottest Princess," this track is raw, bold, and infused with contemporary internet culture, perfectly embodying modern America as depicted in "GTA 6."
Phil Collins' appearance is particularly noteworthy. He has a long history with Vice City, having previously appeared as himself in "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories." Now, with "Against All Odds" playing as Jason rides the elevator, it's hard for veteran players not to see this as Rockstar's nod to past entries.
From country pop, 80s rock, and synth-pop to Southern hip-hop, Latin urban, and electronic dance music, "GTA 6"'s current music selection is as diverse as the population of Leonida itself.
While the songs used in the trailer don't guarantee all 14 will make it into the final game's radio stations, it's clear that Rockstar isn't just aiming to create a Vice City solely of "2026." Instead, they're crafting a city that carries decades of American pop culture memory while simultaneously living in the present.
For "GTA," radio is arguably one of the quickest ways for players to understand its world.
