GRAND THEFT AUTO VI: Map Size Doubles GTA 5, Features Over 600,000 Animations; Main Story Clocks In At 80 Hours

Rockstar Games continues to unveil more development details for "Grand Theft Auto VI." The studio has confirmed that the state of Leonida's map will be twice the size of "Grand Theft Auto V," and the game will feature an astonishing 600,000 animations. This animation count is more than 10 times that of "GTA V" and double that of "Red Dead Redemption 2."

Rockstar development director Rob Nelson discussed the map size during an interview with YouTuber TGG. TGG summarized Nelson's comments, stating that the map is twice the size of "GTA V" and three times that of "Red Dead Redemption 2." TGG further elaborated that Vice City itself is twice the size of Los Santos, and when including Vice City and its surrounding suburbs, the scale becomes 11 times that of Los Santos and its surrounding areas, calling it "insane."

Separately, Nelson told The New York Times that his most recent full playthrough in February 2026 took approximately 80 hours. This playtime included the main story and some "optional objectives that impact the narrative," with the actual duration expected to be even longer for players who delve into extensive side quests and activities.

Beyond the expanded scale, Rockstar North Art Director and Co-Studio Head Aaron Garbut emphasized the density of detail. He stated that "every room in the game has been meticulously considered. Someone has thought about who sits where, what they drink, and what marks they leave on the table."

Garbut added that "photos on the walls genuinely feature the people who live in that room, with their arm tattoos and families in the background appearing in the pictures. Everything has been physically created, built, and photographed before being placed into a random room within a building in this massive city."
