Anyone who enjoys building Gunpla has probably experimented with techniques such as painting, cutting, or weathering. With so many approaches to try, that creative freedom is a huge part of the hobby’s appeal.
Gunpla builder くまモン信者 (@TENSEI_KUMAMON) took the Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny mobile suit piloted by Kira Yamato, the Strike Freedom Gundam, and repainted it as a fallen-to-darkness variant. The sharp-looking finished build quickly sparked discussion and praise online.
For this project, くまモン信者 used the MGEX 1/100 Strike Freedom Gundam. Piloted by protagonist Kira Yamato in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny, the mobile suit displays overwhelming battlefield dominance throughout the series.

The paint scheme was inspired by the idea of Kira Yamato falling into darkness. No physical modifications were made to the kit; the builder kept the original model intact and transformed its appearance entirely through color.
Despite featuring no structural changes, the finished build looks like a completely different mobile suit. The kit’s familiar white-and-blue palette has been replaced with purple, black, and gray, accented with silver for a bold visual overhaul.
According to くまモン信者, the painting itself was not particularly difficult. The real challenge was balancing the colors. Multiple shades of gray and black were mixed to ensure the palette looked cohesive rather than jarring, helping the fallen-to-darkness theme come through more convincingly.
The dramatically different colors give the repainted model a sleek, high-impact look. Users on X responded with comments including, “That looks incredible!!” “Black and purple are the perfect combination. This Strike Freedom makeover really works,” and “The purple frame looks fantastic, and the darker purple armor is just as cool. Dark versions always look great.”
