Film studio Toei celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2026. The familiar theatrical opening that has accompanied Toei throughout the decades has evolved with the times, becoming an unmistakable sight for moviegoers and even inspiring a range of merchandise.
Toei's brand initiative, the Toei Aranami Project, entered a new phase on this year's Toei Day, October 8, 2026. Popular illustrator Ryosuke Takeuchi (タケウチリョースケ, @ryosuketarou) brought Toei's theatrical distribution logo to life as a character for the first time, creating the brand-new Arainami T081.

The Toei Aranami Project is a brand initiative built around Toei's iconic imagery of towering waves crashing against rocks alongside its gleaming triangular logo. Launched in October 2024 to mark the company's 73rd anniversary, the project presents the Toei brand through a range of contemporary creative formats.

The Aranami Project marked its latest evolution on this year's Toei Day. Ryosuke Takeuchi, a hugely popular illustrator on social media whose portfolio includes artwork related to major franchises such as Pokémon and Monster Hunter, reimagined Toei's distribution logo as a character for the first time, creating Arainami T081.
The classic image of massive waves pounding against rocky shores, commonly known as "Wild Waves and Rocks," has been etched into viewers' memories for decades. Its passion and dramatic impact have been preserved in full, now transformed into a new character designed to appeal across generations.
The "T081" in the character's name uses Japanese wordplay to represent TOEI (トウエイ). It combines the company name that has defined Toei for decades with the new character's futuristic, fashion-forward identity. For the design itself, Takeuchi transformed Toei's signature imagery into a character with a polished streetwear aesthetic.
Toei's triangular logo is cleverly woven throughout the design, appearing on the front of her cap, on accessories such as her earrings, and even in her eyes—the very soul of the character—which shine with triangular highlights.
Her vivid blue hair flows into dynamic tips shaped like sprays of crashing water. She stands with one foot planted on the rocks from Toei's classic opening sequence, while her top prominently features the TOEI logo. Together, these details make for one seriously eye-catching design.
Takeuchi said, "It was an honor to design Arainami for Toei's Aranami Project! Since the project is all about those towering waves, I thought her hairstyle would be the perfect way to capture them. I also incorporated Toei's triangular logo throughout the design. Even the symbols in her eyes are triangles! I hope she becomes a character everyone loves!"

Toei has also teased plans to expand Arainami T081 into a variety of projects, including original merchandise and creative content for social media. Just how far this new character will go remains to be seen, but Toei clearly has more in store for her.
