"Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO" Sets January 2027 Premiere, Putting Shinn at the Center of the "FREEDOM" Prequel

A feature-film prequel to the animated film "Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM," Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO has been high on fans’ wish lists ever since its theatrical release was confirmed in May 2026.

On October 9, the official team announced that "Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO" will open in Japanese theaters on January 15, 2027. A teaser visual and new trailer were also unveiled, along with details on the main voice cast, production team, characters, and mobile suits.

"Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO" is a prequel to "Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM." The film brings to the screen a script written by Chiaki Morosawa, Shigeru Morita, and director Mitsuo Fukuda during the development of "SEED FREEDOM," with Shinn Asuka taking center stage.

Set between "Mobile Suit Gundam SEED DESTINY" and "Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM," the story explores what Shinn was thinking during that period—and what he was fighting for. As the film retraces the path that brought him here, a new chapter in Shinn Asuka’s story begins.

Story:

Following the collapse of Dullindal’s Destiny Plan, which sought to determine people’s futures through their genes, nations around the world begin working toward a new peaceful order. Led by Cagalli, chief representative of the Orb United Emirates, they move to establish the global peace-monitoring organization COMPS.

In C.E. 74, the world is slowly entering a new era after the end of a major war, but Shinn still cannot find the path he should follow. Then, ZAFT transfers a mobile suit that survived the battlefields of the past to COMPS’s temporary base on Onogoro Island. That very night, however, the Strike Freedom Gundam is stolen by unknown assailants.

To keep the crisis from escalating, recover the stolen machine, and protect what matters most, Shinn and his comrades once again plunge into battle. The newly released teaser visual centers on Shinn Asuka, one of the protagonists of "Mobile Suit Gundam SEED DESTINY." What was going through Shinn’s mind in the years between "DESTINY" and "FREEDOM"? What was he fighting for? As the story revisits his journey, a brand-new chapter for Shinn Asuka officially gets underway.

Character and mechanical design sheets were also revealed alongside the announcement.

Officials also announced that Daisuke Ono will voice Leonard Valway. The character previously appeared in "Moonlight Valkyrie," a bonus novella distributed to moviegoers for "SEED FREEDOM," but this will mark his first animated appearance.

The "SEED" series’ scripts were long handled by Chiaki Morosawa, who passed away in 2016. This new film once again draws from a screenplay she wrote. Her husband, director Mitsuo Fukuda, shared the following statement:

"Carrying 20 years of emotion, this film is based on the final screenplay completed by my late wife and series composition writer, Chiaki Morosawa. Until fairly recently, I had almost resigned myself to the thought that it might remain shelved forever. Thanks to the fans’ passionate support and encouragement, however, we have finally been able to bring it to the screen in this form. I hope audiences will enjoy the emotions Chiaki was determined to portray, as well as this story connecting ‘DESTINY’ and ‘FREEDOM.’"

The new trailer puts Shinn front and center, while bringing back series favorites including Kira Yamato, Athrun Zala, and Yzak Jule, along with a lineup of mobile suits. Lunamaria Hawke, Shinn’s academy classmate, and Agnes Giebenrath, who debuted in "SEED FREEDOM," also appear in the footage.
