At New York Comic Con 2026, DC Comics announced a new DC Black Label series titled "Green Lantern: The Dying of the Light." "Absolute Superman" writer Jason Aaron is teaming with Spanish artist Tirso Cons for the five-issue series, which is set to launch in March 2027.

Instead of revisiting Green Lantern Hal Jordan in his prime, the story unfolds along an alternate future timeline. Hal has spent 20 years inside a cosmic prison, and age has taken its toll. Worse still, the Green Lantern ring on his finger is nearly out of power.
With his abilities severely limited, Hal must find new ways to harness his willpower and wield the ring. The story has yet to reveal why he was imprisoned, who put him there or which enemy awaits him. Once capable of creating virtually any weapon he could imagine, Hal will now have to make the most of dwindling resources.

According to reports, Aaron compared the project to Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns" during the panel. He said the central idea was essentially: "What if Frank Miller wrote Green Lantern?"
That comparison points to a darker, grittier reexamination of a hero who has lost the power he once commanded. "The Dark Knight Returns" brought an aging Batman out of retirement and used his decline, along with a society in turmoil, to explore the character from a new angle. "Green Lantern: The Dying of the Light" will bring a similar premise into Hal Jordan's cosmic world.
Aaron made his name with crime comics including "Scalped" and "Southern Bastards." He also had an extensive run at Marvel Comics, writing "Thor," "Wolverine" and "Avengers." Along the way, he transformed Jane Foster into Thor and co-created Gorr the God Butcher. Since moving to DC, Aaron has worked on titles including "Absolute Superman" and "Batman: Off-World," making him no stranger to bold reinventions of iconic superheroes.
Cons began his career in the Franco-Belgian comics market, working with publishers including Paquet, Glénat and Delcourt. He later broke into the American comics industry through DC's Elseworlds series "Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter."
Bleeding Cool also reported that the project has been in development for roughly two years. As a DC Black Label title, "Green Lantern: The Dying of the Light" will have room to tell a more self-contained Hal Jordan story rather than simply continuing his mainline adventures. DC has not yet released a complete synopsis or full details for each issue.
